THE SISTERS OF MERCY
The Sisters of Mercy are a British gothic rock band from Leeds. It was formed in 1980 by Andrew Eldritch and Gary Marx.
Andrew Eldritch declares that the name of the group is inspired by a song by Leonard Cohen where the phrase "the sisters of mercy" would designate alternately a religious order of the same name and prostitutes. Another explanation, more likely, exists as to the origin of the name of the group which would be a reference to the sisters of the Brontë family, writers originating from Leeds like the group. Very influential in Gothic circles, the group has only released three albums in more than 30 years of existence. Work on sound and melody has always characterized their works. Their concerts are often described as an "experiment", including layers of thick smoke accompanied by light effects.
The Sisters of Mercy is strongly marked by the personality of Andrew Eldritch, vocalist around whom the composition of the group has often changed. One of the characteristics of the formation is to have always used a drum machine called Doktor Avalanche. Present on all the recordings and used at each concert, the instrument is considered as an entity in its own right of the group.
Very independent and wanting to keep the artistic control of the group, Andrew Eldritch creates Merciful Release, his own label, and even when he signs with the major WEA, he will keep within this collaboration the production, the design and the artistic direction of the discs. , WEA taking care of the distribution and the promotion of the group. He is one of the founders of the Gothic style, recognized in this by the unanimity of critics, although he rejects the qualification of Gothic. His lyrics are often cynical, wry, referencing various artists, philosophers and historical events he enjoys.
