Pace Gallery Geneva has the honor of presenting James Turrell: Elemental, the first monographic exhibition of the founder of the Light & Space movement within the Geneva gallery. On view from February 25 to May 7, 2022, this exhibition marks the 20th anniversary of Pace’s portrayal of James Turrell. Elemental is a brand new immersive installation that completely overwhelms the gallery space; it is based on the exploration of perception, light, space and time. James Turrell’s work defies classification, he explains, “without object, without image and without focus, what are you looking at? You are looking at what you are looking at”. Placing the experiences of time and space at the heart of his practice, James Turrell’s installation spreads a work that escapes physical constraints. The imperceptible transitions of pulsating colors mimic the rhythm of human breathing. Yet framed by curved corners similar to portholes – or the convex look of the horizon line – the work is elevated to celestial grandeur.
