Function (Dave Sumner), one of the true heroes of underground techno, has been a DJ and musician for over 25 years. He is a founding member of the Sandwell District collective, Ostgut recording artist and owner of Infrastructure.
Originally from New York, he was seduced by techno when Jeff Mills held a residency (as well as his own premiere) at Limelight in the early 90s. A producer from the mid-90s, he released his first EPs on Damon Wild's Synewave and on his own Infrastructure label. A chance encounter in 1996 leads her to meet Regis (Karl O'Connor). The two work under the name Portion Reform, releasing uncompromising music on Downwards, making him the only producer from outside Birmingham to feature on the label. He then moved to Berlin in 2007, still working with Regis, and now Silent Servant (Juan Mendez), focusing on the Sandwell District. The label has since grown into a cult collective, decentralizing the artist's ego, blurring the lines between artist, label and DJ, reorganizing the DNA of modern dance music.

Coming from the vanguard of artists pushing the boundaries of Brooklyn, Akua has proven she's not afraid to redefine techno on her own terms. The Ghanaian-American DJ has cultivated a sound that reflects her passion for research and recontextualization, infusing old-school tracks and techniques with a vision of dance floors of the future.
Akua takes a dynamic approach to the art that fuses a sense of playful confrontation and high-intensity rhythm changes, giving his sets a sense of conceptual rigor and undeniable energy. Drawing from a deep appreciation for the weirdest strains of techno from the past, his style reflects a relentless study of the medium and a reinvention of its frameworks in modern ways. Its finesse for blending funk machine frequencies possesses a distinct harshness and characteristic trippy character, creating a space where simple distinctions and gender boundaries disintegrate. As Akua cuts through acid-soaked basslines, frenetic drumming and distorted synths, her sets leave listeners with a fierce compulsion to move as they get lost and found in the torrent of sound she weaves.
